Cozy Canvas Camping

A glamping experience at First Landing State Park.

We spent a night under the stars at First Landing State Park with the boys thanks to Cozy Canvas Camping. Glamping style camping was my compromise to a night in the wild as the campsite was setup for us. The large sturdy canvas tent was furnished with beds and linens (two pillows per head), an area rug, fans and a lantern. Outside included an area rug, string lights and two wooden Adirondack chairs. The park amenities provided us with a table and fire pit with a grill topper. Our location was much more open and private than most other plots we saw driving to our campsite. The owner of Cozy Canvas Camping, Megan, was pleasant and very accessible via email, phone and text for questions.

First Landing State Park is situated on the Chesapeake Bay so it allowed for a beach day with the boys before camping. Here's a bit about the park:

  • The 2,888 acre park has over 200 plots of varying sizes that can be rented. Fees range from $24 to $32, plus tax. Pets are allowed for an additional $5 per night charge.

  • There are also cabins that can be rented. Cabin fees range from $94 to $139 a night, plus tax and reservation fees. Pets are an additional $10 charge per night.

  • The grounds and trails are open daily, from 8am until dusk, to day visitors. Admission to the park is $4 per vehicle on weekdays and $5 on weekends.

  • The campsite has a small store where you can shop for basic necessities and public bathrooms with showers to clean up as well.

For dinner, we made chicken nachos in our Dutch oven and other camping classics like hot dogs and s’mores. Technically, we roasted giant marshmallows and stuck chocolate bars in the middle of them since I forgot the graham crackers. Kris got creative and used tortilla chips to sandwich the gooey goodness. And while I know Dutch ovens are highly recommended for camping, probably not the white painted version like mine, as it got charred. Womp. Mama is not happy about it so here is hoping a little elbow grease does the trick.

We have never camped as a family before and because it was all new to us, we forgot a few cooking provisions and were force to improvise. But at the end of the day, bellies were full and the boys had fun helping!

We narrowly caught the sunset on the sand before making our way back to the campsite where the boys rocked head lamps by the campfire before bedtime. After about 20 minutes of giggles, they fell and stayed asleep for about 10 hours - WAY more than I anticipated. I even got 8 hours of sleep with a 2am escorted bathroom break, as I was scared to do it by myself in the dark — thanks Kris! A pregnant woman’s bladder just cannot wait. Our missing cooking provisions made a campfire breakfast not possible so we were packed and headed home around 7am to fill our bellies and take a real bath! If you don’t have the equipment and want to give camping a whirl, Cozy Canvas Camping is the way to go! No setup or breakdown, just pay the $150 and show up and enjoy! They also offer other setup options and add one that you can review and book on their website.

Quick Tips:

  • Research camp cooking provision lists online so you don’t miss the key items we did. We missed foil, cleaning supplies, grill tools and oven mitts. We also under estimated how much wood we need.

  • Clearly bring the bug spray but you have a bug salt gun (A-Salt-Rifle) — bring it! If you don’t have one — buy and bring it! The tent does a good job of keeping bugs out but you will still be greeted by a lot of eight-legged friends on your adventure. And yeah, I know it’s there environment but I personally don’t want to sleep with them hanging over my head
