Remote Carova, N. Carolina Getaway

Family time on the sand alongside the wild horses!

Since having kids, we have not taken very man family vacations. Our trip to Carova was technically only our second as a family of four. Just before COVID-19 hit, we had booked a resort vacation in Florida because we were really feeling the need to get away. Little did we know at the time, that trip would be canceled and we would wait 6 months before we were able to get out of town.

After riding the wave of COVID-19 for months, we finally felt like things were under control enough to slip away for a week with the kids. But the question of where to go that felt safe remained. Kris had frequently talked about going to Carova, a remote beach town just past the boarder of North Carolina and Virginia (hence Caro-va), that could only be access by 4x4 vehicles as the streets were made of sand. And if the sound of that is not dreamy enough for you fellow beach-lovers, in Carova, wild horses roam free. Yeah - sign me up!

So I started searching on vacation websites like VRBO and Home Away for a place in the beach town that sounded too good to be true. Much to our disappointment, the options were slim. It seemed the remote escape had become an ideal COVID-19 option for many locals because the houses were limited. But after a few weeks of searching every night before going to bed, a highly rated home one block from the beach popped up and we quickly made it ours!

Here are a few images from our week on the sand!

Quick Takeaways

  • The wild mustangs are descendants of the Spanish wild horses believed to arrive in North Carolina back in the 1500s.

  • The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was created in the 1980s to protect the animals and preserve the land they have lives off for all these years.

  • Driving on the sand was super cool! You need to Let air out of your tires, drive no more than 35 miles per hour and avoid high tide.
